Good Things Come to Those Who Wait?

We've all heard the expression, "Good things come to those who wait." But I've come to believe that this saying has been responsible for keeping far too many people stuck in situations they should have walked away from years ago.

Patience is a virtue. But patience without progress is just wasted time.

How many women have stayed in relationships waiting for a man to become the person he promised he would be? How many men have remained in unhappy marriages waiting for things to get better? How many people have put their dreams on hold, waiting for the perfect opportunity, the perfect moment, or someone else's permission?

At what point does patience become an excuse for accepting less than you deserve?

There is a difference between waiting for something worth having and waiting for something that may never happen.

A healthy relationship takes time to develop. A successful career takes effort and persistence. A strong marriage requires patience, compromise, and commitment. But none of those things happen simply because you waited long enough.

Time alone does not change people. Time alone does not fix relationships. And time alone does not create opportunities.

As a divorce attorney, I've seen people spend decades waiting for their spouses to change, believing that if they just loved harder, sacrificed more, or gave things a little more time, everything would eventually fall into place.

Sometimes it does. But sometimes the only thing that changes is how much of your life you've spent waiting. And here's something else worth remembering: Just because you've invested years in something doesn't mean you owe it the rest of your life.

I'm not suggesting that we abandon relationships, careers, or dreams the moment things become difficult. Anything worth having usually requires patience.

But patience should have a purpose. There should be effort, growth, accountability, and some indication that you're moving toward something better.

So perhaps it's time to change the expression. Good things don't necessarily come to those who wait. Good things come to those who know when to be patient, when to take action, and when to walk away.

Because sometimes the good thing you've been waiting for is on the other side of the decision you've been afraid to make.

Let's Talk About It:

Have we confused patience with settling? How long is too long to wait for someone—or something—to change?
